The men's soccer team, ranked No. 22 in the NAIA, opened conference play on Friday. The team played Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) foe, the (RV) Milligan University Buffaloes, at the TWU Athletic Complex.
The first goal of the game came in the fourth minute of play. Fortunately, it came for the Bulldogs. Manny Arredondo hit a pass between two defenders to a streaking Jonah Lewis, who scored the first goal of his collegiate career to give the team a 1-0 lead. Fourteen minutes late, Lewis scored again. This time, Lewis headed a shot to the upper right corner of the net off a Billy Boag corner kick, moving the lead to two goals. Milligan did not score in the first half as TWU held a 2-0 lead at the halftime break.
Over the first few minutes of the second half, the Bulldogs took five shots. Boag had one hit the crossbar, while the others by Lewis, Keegan Hegarty, Arredondo, Gavin Morgan, and Wynand Wessels went wide or were saved by the keeper. In the 61st minute, another goal was recorded. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, this goal went for Milligan, cutting the team's lead in half. The defense held Milligan scoreless for the remainder of the game, giving Tennessee Wesleyan a 2-1 victory for the conference win.
Lewis recorded the first two goals of his college career in the game.
Up next for the Bulldogs (2-0-2, 1-0 AAC) is another home conference matchup on Wednesday. The team hosts Reinhardt University for a 3:00 p.m., kick-off.
