The women's volleyball team was back in action on Saturday. The team stayed on the road to play a tri-match against the Truett McConnell University Lady Bears, an Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, and the Florida College Lady Falcons, a non-conference opponent. The team first faced Truett McConnell.
vs. Truett McConnell
The first set started well for the Lady Bulldogs as a kill by Megan Lee and Amya Sutton helped put the set in a 3-3 tie. Madison Coffey's kill made the score 7-4 in favor of Truett McConnell before an 11-4 run by the opponents set them in control of the set. The opponents went on to take the first set 25-17.
Lee and Sutton helped the team take a 4-2 lead early in the second set. Truett McConnell overtook the lead on the scoreboard and kills by Shante Smith and Coffey were not enough to bring the team back, falling in the second set 25-11.
The third set saw a momentum shift. TWU took an early 6-2 lead, eventually seeing their lead grow to 8-5 after a Kamari Jackson and Lee block assist. Sutton, Coffey, and Smith kept the lead in the Lady Bulldogs' favor as the score moved to 13-10. The team extended the lead to 18-13, eventually moving ahead 23-19. The tide changed again though as Truett McConnell scored five straight points to move ahead 24-23. Coffey put the match in a 25-25 tie but the opponents scored the two points needed to end the set by a score of 27-25, taking the match 3-0.
Sutton led the team with eight kills in the match while Olivia Bolin led with 12 assists. Megan Thompson led with seven digs.
vs. Florida College
Early on in the first set, Olivia Miller had a kill to make the score 5-3 in favor of Florida. Even though the opponents maintained the lead, the score remained close. A kill by Lee cut the deficit to one while a kill by Sutton kept the deficit at one. TWU brought the score within one point again but Florida scored four straight points to win the set 25-20.
The second set did not start out well for the Lady Bulldogs. Florida scored the first eight points of the set to lead 8-0. Points from Sutton, Miller, and Lee along with some errors on the other team helped the team make the score 13-8. The comeback kept going as a block assist by Sutton and Miller helped the team pull within one point of the lead with the scoreboard reading 19-18. What started as an 8-0 deficit eventually turned into a two-point advantage when Tennessee Wesleyan pulled ahead 21-19 on a Sutton kill. Unfortunately, Florida scored six of the remaining seven points in the set to win the second set 25-22.
The team found themselves in a 5-0 hole in the early segments of the third set. Back-to-back kills by Sutton and Lee helped the team climb back in the set, making the score 8-5 in favor of the opponents. The opponents went on an 8-3 run to extend their lead to 16-8, not letting the Lady Bulldogs' offense get them back into the set. Florida College went on to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Sutton finished with a new career-high 16 kills in the match while Bolin aided with 18 assists. Thompson led the defensive efforts with 13 digs.
