The 20th nationally ranked Lee women's basketball team outscored Florida Southern 15-0 to open the fourth quarter in posting an impressive 97-79 victory in the opening round of the Gulf South/Sunshine State Crossover Tournament being hosted on the campus of Saint Leo College.
After two impressive exhibition showings, the Lady Flames continued their high-scoring ways against the talented Mocs squad and led by only two points (67-65) after three quarters of play. Led by Haley Schubert, Lee opened the final period on the 15-0 run and never looked back. The Lady Flames will return to action on Saturday and will be pitted against host Saint Leo in a contest slated for a 3:30 tip.
Lee shot a remarkable 63.6% (14-of-22) from 3-point range. Overall, the Lady Flames knocked down 67% from the field (36-of-54). They capped off the day by making 11-of-14 charity attempts. Haley Schubert paced the Lee scoring with 23 points and made 9-of-16 shots from the field. Mallory Hampton had 18 points and made a pair of triples. Hannah Garrett was perfect from beyond the arc (3-of-3) and finished with 15 points. Addison Smith rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 while Mia Hurst added nine and Morgan Carbaugh finished with eight.
Garrett went to the glass for six rebounds and Hampton pulled down five as the Lady Flames outrebounded the Mocs 24-22. Ashley Smith paced Florida Southern with 25 points and eight rebounds. Domenic Zamora and Dabu Arielle added 15 points apiece. The Mocs were whistled for only seven personal fouls while the Lady Flames were charged with 22.
Florida Southern stayed in the game by shooting 49% from the field, 43% from 3-point range and the Mocs converted 14-of-16 charity tosses (87.5%).
"This was a good win to start the year. I thought our depth showed tonight with us having to battle foul trouble," said Coach Marty Rowe. The Lady Flames had three players with four personal fouls and two others with three. Ten players played quality minutes and all totaled 13 players entered the contest while 11 scored.
"We have a long way to go defensively as a group, but this is definitely a good learning tool for our team," said the coach in closing.
