Tennessee Wesleyan University Women's Basketball defeats Union on Senior Day

The women's basketball team played their final game of the regular season on Saturday. The team hosted the Union College Lady Bulldogs on Senior Day in the final Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game of the regular season.

The first nine points for the women's basketball team came in the form of a series of three points. Anna Crowder had the first three points of the sequence with a three-pointer, followed by Jordan Wright with a three-point play, and Yeika Jimenez Diaz ended the sequence with a three-pointer to give the team a 9-3 lead. Union scored the next six points to tie the game at nine. Crowder broke the tie with a pair of free throws and Jaci Powell extended the lead to 14-9 with a three-point basket. The quarter ended with TWU leading 14-12.

The opponents scored the first six points of the second quarter to lead by four points. A pair of free throws by Mikalee Martin and an Alexis Bates jumper tied the game 18-18. Union broke the tie and pulled ahead 23-18. The home Lady Bulldogs were not able to turn the lead back in their favor before the halftime break though, seeing a layup by Bates, a three-pointer by Wright and a Martin free throw make the score 27-24 at the halftime break.

TWU opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run through the first four minutes. Jimenez Diaz, Cambree Mayo, and Crowder all scored during the scoring streak. The opponents brought the score within one point with 4:58 remaining in the quarter. Ashley Baxter started a scoring streak that helped the team hold a 47-42 lead at the end of the quarter with consecutive three-pointers. Bates and Wright also scored in the rally.

The game became close as Union scored four straight points to cut the lead down to one point two minutes into the quarter. With 4:27 remaining in the game, Tennessee Wesleyan held a 64-49. A 17-3 run that included scoring by Jimenez Diaz, Baxter, Wright, and Crowder helped the team take their largest lead of the game. A three-point play by Powell, along with free throws by Crowder and Powell helped TWU win their regular season finale by a score of 72-63.

Jimenez Diaz led the team with 16 points while Baxter (13), Crowder (12), and Wright (11) were also in double figures. Crowder led on the glass with nine rebounds.

Up next for the Lady Bulldogs (18-8, 16-8 AAC) is the AAC Tournament.
