On Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, Lee University will host its annual Lee Day weekend, a time of excitement and information geared toward prospective students and their families. Over the course of the event, visitors will have the chance to participate in over 40 different activities, offering a glimpse into the unique mixture of clubs, people, cultures, and opportunities that the university comprises.
“We are so excited to welcome prospective students and their families for Lee Day 2023,” said Dr. Shane Griffith, Lee’s assistant vice president for enrollment. “This event is created to provide an inside look at the Lee University experience from academics to student life. We have packed as much information and fun as possible into this two-day event.”
Registration will begin on Friday at 8:30 a.m., along with campus tours and the Residence Hall Open House. Prospective students will then be able to sit in on one of the many featured classes to get a firsthand look at the classroom experience.
Early Class Selection will be offered by appointment in which students can meet one-on-one with an academic advisor to register for classes, discuss academic plans, and create a full schedule for the fall semester.
There will be a lunch provided for all guests in the Deacon Jones Dining Hall. Academic displays for various disciplines will be set up that afternoon in the School of Business lobby so students can discover more about their programs of interest. An informational session for parents on student success initiatives will be held that afternoon.
More informational sessions will take place that afternoon about financial aid, Lee’s theatre program, and Summer Honors, a two-week experience that prepares high schoolers for the academic and social challenges of college while earning six college credits. Major Discovery will take place Friday at 4 p.m., allowing prospective students the chance to hear about the majors Lee has to offer and talk with faculty and students about various field of study options.
The highly-anticipated Block Party will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the Sharp Pedestrian Mall, offering food, fun, and the opportunity to meet current students.
New this year, Lee will introduce “7 at 7,” a collection of seven events from which prospective students and families can choose to attend at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Activities during “7 at 7” include three-on-three basketball, sand volleyball, and a home run derby hosted by Lee Athletics; “Colors and Coffee,” an art session with Mary Mathias-Dickerson, art professor at Lee; and a screening of the Lee’s historical documentary in the Communication Arts Building’s screening room.
Additionally, “7 at 7” will present “Lee Talks,” during which some of Lee’s faculty will give their best 10-minute lecture; Lee Theatre’s production of “Jack’s Tale;” a Lee Music Showcase, featuring some of the campus’s ensembles; and the Shenanigans Improv Team comedy show.
Saturday’s events will begin at 7 a.m. with registration, campus tours, and Early Class Selection. The morning will also offer more opportunities to check out the academic displays and residence halls. A series of informational sessions will begin at 9 a.m., which includes a financial aid talk, an athletics info session offering guests the chance to meet and talk with coaches, and a special Lunch and Learn meeting for parents with Lee’s President, Dr. Mark Walker.
“Lee Day is such a long-held tradition, and the entire campus family rallies around making this a special weekend for our guests,” said Dr. Jayson VanHook, vice president for enrollment and marketing. “Whether a student is just checking out Lee for the first time, or already planning to attend this coming fall, our goal is to make the weekend exciting, productive, and memorable for them.”
Lee U Spotlight will take place at 10:30 that morning in the Conn Center, highlighting Lee music, award-winning videos, and alumni stories designed to provide attendees with a clear picture of life at Lee. Separate luncheons for transfer students and high schoolers will take place at various locations across campus, where they will be able to enter the scholarship drawing taking place that evening.
Following the luncheons, guests can stroll through the Pedestrian Mall and check out the student booths, highlighting many of the more than 100 student clubs and organizations available at the university. School of Music auditions will also take place during this time.
Guests can then watch the Flames and Lady Flames tennis teams take on Delta State University for Senior Day at 11 a.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center.
Later that afternoon, academic support services will lead a session on disability services offered by the school. The Academic Program Showcase, which provides a closer look at specific majors and programs, will take place at 3 p.m.
Last, but not least, participants are invited to join LeeU Worship and Voices of Lee for a Worship Rally with President Walker in the Conn Center at 4 p.m. At the conclusion of the service, scholarships will be drawn and awarded to prospective students, followed by a barbecue for everyone in Alumni Park.
“Lee Day 2023 will be a wonderful time on our campus for prospective students and parents,” said veteran Lee Day planner Danny Murray. “Guests can visit classes, dorms, meet faculty and students, plus receive valuable financial aid info, and even select class schedules for the fall semester. Don’t miss out on food, fun, and scholarship drawings!”
All events will be free for registered Lee Day guests.
